Trim ceramic tile already installed on floor?
Appointment: January 26, 2022 08:59AM
I'k looking at redoing a cupboard area past the front end door where there is currently 12x12" ceramic tile on the floor, and I need to cut off about 2" from the border on near 6 tiles to make room for a new born drawer unit. Is this possible and what tools would be needed?

If you have a dremel:

or borrow an angle grinder.

I wouldn't use the smaller dremel "spinner". It would piece of work (depending on the blazon and quality of the tile). It all depends on whether the cut line you make is going to hidden by a slice of trim or some such??
Difficult to cut a bang-up, truly straight line with a Dremel spinner tool.
I've been using the Dremel "Saw Max" for these types of things. I notice them to be extremely useful for anumber of things..and they cut tile - volition do a good straight line to every bit they are alike to a small circular saw.
Dreml Saw Max
I don't actually consider these to be pro tools every bit the motor in them pretty much is going to DIE afterward I (ab)employ this affair a few more times..crap motor and not much torque to speak of..whatever, it does things none of my other tools can do..
'Flush cuts for flooring, drop cuts into odd spots, sparse kerf bract is very useful..
In that location is a bract included for cutting tile and it works..you have to figure out how to cut the areas it won't reach..the Dremel spinning tool is perfect for finishing these kinds of cuts into flooring.
The large question: Is the cut line you're gonna make in the tile going to be visible when the project is done??
: )

OK thanks, I was thinking a Dremel might work, just what a pain that is going to be.
EDIT: The Dremel Max Saw looks like just the affair!
Any precautions to make sure the tiles don't crack? Or is that not a concern since they are already down?

Mike..I added some info upwardly at that place..
Also..in that location are the Dremel (and other brands) and so chosen "Multi Tools"
Multi Toolage
Never used one but I do know they can cut tile..
If you become the route of regular spinning Dremel or Multi Tool..become s straight edge involved for a guide.

I would put masking tape over the expanse to be cut to both depict a line, and get a little protection from dents.
It will not exist perfect though.
Skilful luck!

Equally above. Besides plan on putting a slice of quarter round tile or molding to cover the cut line. A piddling molding hides many sins.

Can't you shim up the area (add plywood or something) not covered by tile and put the drawer unit of measurement on top of the tile? Is the 3/8-1/2 inch or and so of summit that disquisitional?

I would do this with a masonry bract on a round saw/skill saw. Easy to control the depth so you don't go through the subfloor, easy to cutting a adequately straight line--both of which are problems using an angle grinder. Blades are just a few bucks each. Possibly need to use the dremel or something similar to get the corners where the round blade won't quite accomplish, depending on the exact placement.
An oscillating multi-tool might likewise cut the very corners, but I've not seen masonry/tile type blades for them. If you had the correct blade one of these could practice the whole job, but it has the same problems that the bending grinder does. Circular saw much quicker, straighter, consequent depth.

I volition exist going right upwardly to a wall on one side, cutting off the moulding too at the same point. Having control over the depth does sounds critical, but I imagine the Saw Max tool would have that? I suppose since I already have a circular saw I should just get a masonry blade for that instead. Thanks.

That Dremel Saw Max is non a grinder. It's a mini round saw..verbal same sort of platform as circular saw with depth control..information technology will get MUCH closer ends of the cut then less trimming. It's not as powerful as a full diddled circular saw and so you need to focus on letting the blade'southward rotation do the work.
If y'all tin gear up a direct edge as guide information technology would exist Dainty.
